A couple asked us whether August is a mistake

A couple wrote to us in March with a single line: is August a mistake. They had flights they could not move and two weeks of leave they could not shift, and they had read enough forums to be nervous. The honest answer is that August is not a mistake, but it is a month with rules, and the people who ignore them are the ones who come home saying the heat ruined it. Sicilians have been managing an August here for three thousand years. The method is not complicated and it is not a secret. You simply stop trying to use the middle of the day for anything at all.

Here is what an August day looks like from the inside. It is pleasant from six until about half past ten. Between eleven and one the sun stops being a light source and becomes a weight. Between one and four almost nothing moves: shutters close, the towns go silent, and the beach that was full at ten belongs to whoever is willing to sit in thirty five degrees without shade. From five the island restarts. By seven the passeggiata is out, by nine everybody is eating, and by eleven there are children in the piazza who would be in bed anywhere else in Europe. The day has two halves and a hole in the middle.

The part that surprises visitors is the emptying of the coast in the early afternoon. Sicilians go to the sea in August, but they go early, at eight or nine, and they leave at one to eat and to sleep. Anyone still on the sand at half past two is almost certainly not from here. The water is at its best in that first stretch, flat and cool at the edges before the day warms it, and again after six when the light lengthens across it. That rhythm is the single most useful thing to copy. Follow it and August is generous. Fight it and you will spend a fortnight tired and mildly disappointed.

For a ceremony this settles the timing without much debate. In July the good light opens around 19:30. Through August it slides gradually earlier, and by the end of the month you are closer to seven. So the shape is straightforward: nothing before five, on site around half past six, ceremony as the heat lifts, photographs into the last of the light, dinner at nine like everybody else. Cristiana leads the ceremony and will keep it to the length the temperature allows, which in August is shorter than in October and better for being shorter. One date to plan around: the fifteenth of August. Ferragosto is the fixed centre of the Italian holiday, and on that day and the two either side the coast is at its fullest, restaurants are committed to families who reserved in June, and much ordinary business is shut. Public sites stay open. Small suppliers, offices and workshops frequently do not. If your paperwork involves an appointment at a comune, do not put it in the week of Ferragosto. Where you go matters as much as when. In August we lean inland and upward. The Valley of the Temples at seven in the evening, with the stone giving back the day's heat, is the best it is all year, and the crowds have gone to dinner. La Rocca above Cefalu is cooler than the town below it and the climb is bearable after six. The old harbour at Ortigia works late, with light coming off the water and the streets alive until midnight. Punta Bianca and Scala dei Turchi are exposed and have no shade at all, so we treat them strictly as evening places in August. The comparison is set out at /locations.

August rewards discipline and punishes improvisation. If your dates are fixed and the middle of the month is what you have, that is workable, and we would rather build the day properly around the heat than pretend the heat is not there.
