The minute before you ask

20 July 2026 · 4 min · LOVEIN Journal

The track down to Punta Bianca is loose stone and low scrub. It takes about eleven minutes to walk if you are not rushing, and almost everyone rushes it, because they know what is waiting at the end. In July the light does not begin to soften until around 19:30. Arrive at 19:00 and you will be standing on white marl in flat glare with nothing to do but wait, and waiting is the one thing you are least equipped for that evening. This is why we talk about the walk before we talk about the question. Those eleven minutes are not transport. They are the opening movement of the thing you are about to do.

Surprise proposals rarely go wrong in a dramatic way. They go wrong quietly, in one of two directions. Either you arrive too early and burn twenty minutes of nerve in the wrong light, or you arrive late and ask in a scramble with the sun already behind the headland. So we plan backwards from the hour. Salvo chooses a stopping point in advance: a rock, a gap in a dry stone wall, a bend where the path opens out. You are given an arrival window of roughly ten minutes rather than a fixed time. Nobody can hit a mark to the second with unsteady hands. Most people can manage to be somewhere inside a ten minute band.

You also need a reason to be on that path, and it has to be a reason your partner accepts without curiosity. A walk before dinner works. A viewpoint someone at the hotel mentioned works. A holiday portrait session works particularly well, because it explains the presence of a photographer, it explains why you asked them to wear the good shirt, and it explains why you keep checking the time. We arrange proposals under that cover regularly, and how each one is structured is set out at /experiences. The principle behind all of them is the same. The pretext should require nothing of your partner except that they come for a walk.

Salvo works at distance for the first part of it. Usually forty metres or more, on a long lens, with no greeting and no eye contact. If he acknowledges you, your partner turns to look, and the turn is the tell. There is no signal for you to give and no cue for you to remember. You walk, you stop where you agreed to stop, and you ask. Everything else was settled days earlier, which is the entire point of choreography. It takes the decisions out of the one minute in which you are least able to make them.

In that minute, say less than you planned. People over narrate under adrenaline. They summarise the relationship, they thank the family, they explain the ring, and the person in front of them stopped listening after the first sentence because they already know what is happening. Three sentences is plenty. Why here, why now, and the question. If you forget the middle one, nobody will ever know it existed. The silence between the sentences is not a gap that needs filling either. On a cliff in July with the sea going gold underneath you, a pause reads as composure.

Then leave the twenty minutes afterwards completely empty. Do not hold a table for 20:00. The stretch immediately after the question is the part couples describe most vividly a year later, and it is almost never the kiss. It is sitting down on a rock because your legs have gone. It is the phone call to a sister who shouts. It is the two of you saying very little for a while. Salvo keeps working at distance through all of that, and only later, once the adrenaline has dropped, does he come close for portraits. By then you are unselfconscious in a way that no amount of direction could produce.

If you are planning something along these lines and want to work out the hour, the path and the pretext properly, write to us with your dates and the part of the island you will be in. We will tell you what the light is doing that week, how long the walk actually takes, and whether the place you have in mind will be quiet at that hour or full of people with tripods. That tends to be the beginning of a conversation rather than a form to fill in.
