How far is the walk down to Punta Bianca

The question comes up in almost every enquiry about Punta Bianca, and it is the right question to ask first. How far is the walk, and can I do it in the dress. The honest answer is about twenty minutes down from where the cars stop, on a rough track of white marl and loose stone, with no steps, no handrail and no shade at any point. Coming back up takes closer to thirty, usually in fading light. You can certainly do it. You cannot do it in the dress and the heels you plan to be photographed in, which is why everybody carries and changes at the bottom.

What you get for the walk is a stretch of coast that looks like nowhere else in Sicily. Punta Bianca is a headland of chalk white marl east of Agrigento, cut into terraces and gullies by rain, dropping into water that reads turquoise over the pale seabed even in poor light. Below it there is a narrow beach of grey pebbles. Above it, thin scrub and the concrete of an abandoned military zone left over from the last century. There is no bar, no kiosk, no lifeguard and no lighting. Bring water in summer, and take everything you carried down back up with you.

The hour matters here for a reason specific to the rock. White marl behaves like a very large reflector. In the middle of the day it bounces so much light that faces squint and skin goes chalky, and the sea flattens into hard glare. In the last hour the same surface turns cream, then apricot, and it throws warm light back up under the chin, which is the most flattering fill light available anywhere on this coast. In February that hour begins around 16:30, in October around 17:15, in July around 19:30. We plan the descent backwards from those times and we do not improvise it.

Punta Bianca suits two kinds of commission and is wrong for everything else. It suits a proposal, because out of season you can be genuinely alone, with no restaurant terrace of strangers watching. It suits an elopement of two people who want their vows read with nobody else present, which is where Cristiana works at her best: no microphone, no audience, a text written for the two of you and spoken at conversational volume with the sea underneath it. It does not suit guests. If you are bringing family, older parents, or anybody in formal shoes, choose a site with a road that reaches it.

Two practical warnings that no photograph will give you. The cliff edges are marl, not rock. They crumble, and every year somebody stands too close for a picture. We keep well back from the lip and we say so on the day, politely and more than once. The track back up is genuinely dark twenty minutes after the sun goes, so we carry torches and we leave when we said we would leave. Access along this coast is also subject to local rules that change, including seasonal restrictions on parts of the shoreline, so confirm current requirements with the comune before treating any of it as guaranteed.

A typical evening runs like this. We meet where the cars stop, an hour and a quarter before the light. You walk down in trainers with your clothes in a bag. Salvo goes ahead to read the tide line and the gullies, because the usable ground shifts through the year and last summer's route is not always this summer's. You change behind the terraces. The question, or the ceremony, happens with perhaps forty minutes of good light left, and then we work along the shore while the colour drops out of the sky. Nobody is hurried, because the timetable was built around the sun.
