When the cloud comes in over Punta Bianca

Late October, a little after four, and the band of grey arrives from the west faster than anyone standing on Punta Bianca expects. The white cliffs go flat. The sea loses its floor and turns the colour of slate. Twenty minutes later it is raining hard enough that the path back up is running with water, and forty minutes after that the sky is clean again and the light is better than it had been all afternoon. That sequence is the honest answer to the question every couple asks in the second or third email. What happens if it rains.

Rain in Sicily behaves differently from rain in Manchester or Seattle. It rarely settles in for a whole day. It arrives as a short violent hour, empties itself, and moves on. July and August are effectively dry. Autumn brings those sharp episodes, often in the late afternoon. February is genuinely variable and we say so to anyone planning a winter elopement. None of this is a guarantee, and anyone guaranteeing weather is selling you something. It does mean the useful question is not whether it will rain on your date, but what the plan is for the ninety minutes when it does.

We start watching the forecast five days out and we tell you what we see, including when it looks poor. Three days out we agree a decision point, usually the morning itself, with a fallback hour and a fallback place already named. Nothing is invented on the day in a panic. If the coast is being hit, the lanes behind the old harbour in Ortigia hold their shape in wet weather and there is cover within a few steps. If the wind is the problem rather than the water, and at Scala dei Turchi it often is, we move inland where the air is still.

Most of the time we move the hour, not the day. A storm that ruins five o'clock in October frequently leaves 17:15 the following evening completely clear, and if you are in Sicily for a week that costs you nothing but a rearranged dinner. This is one reason we ask early how long you are staying and which evenings are already committed. A couple with three flexible evenings is close to impossible to defeat with weather. A couple with one evening is not, and we will say so at the start rather than after you have committed to dates.

Shelter is the other variable. The public locations we work in are open ground: the Valley of the Temples, Punta Bianca, Torre Capo Rama, La Rocca above Cefalu. There is no roof over any of them. Moresca Farm, our one private estate in the Agrigento countryside, has buildings and trees and a long table that can be moved under cover, which is why couples who want a seated ceremony rather than a walk sometimes ask about it. It is worth saying that wet stone is not a disaster. Limestone darkens and the colour deepens. The Valley empties of visitors within minutes of the first heavy drops, which is something you cannot arrange at any other time or for any other reason. Some of the strongest frames of recent years came in the twenty minutes after a downpour, when the light returns low and the ground is still reflecting it. We will not pretend a thunderstorm is charming, and we will not send you out into one. But grey is not the same thing as ruined.

What we will not do is hold a ceremony in conditions that make it miserable and then tell you afterwards that the pictures came out well. Claire and Rob married on 31 July, when the rain risk is close to nothing and the only real enemy is heat. A February date is a different conversation and needs a different plan built around a shorter window.
