Hay bales under olive trees, and the guest question

9 February 2026 · 6 min · LOVEIN Journal

On 31 July, Claire and Rob married at Moresca Farm and the Valley of the Temples. Hay bales for seating under the olive trees. Long tables in the shade, laid for a group small enough that one conversation could cross the whole length of them. Vows timed so the last light of the day was on their faces rather than the back of their heads. What people notice in those photographs is the setting. What actually made the day work was a decision the two of them took months earlier, at a kitchen table in England, about who would be sitting on those bales.

Guest numbers do not scale smoothly. They jump between states, and each state is a different event. Just the two of you is a private hour that can happen anywhere and move at short notice. Two witnesses is the same hour with a small audience. Around a dozen people is the first point at which you need transport, seating, shade and a table, and it is where a ceremony stops being portable. Thirty is a wedding with all a wedding's logistics, and it needs a venue rather than a location. Deciding which of those four you want should come before anything else.

If you want the marriage to be legally binding rather than symbolic, witnesses are not optional and the rules about who may serve as one, what identification they need, and how documents are translated vary by nationality and are revised periodically. Cristiana handles the translation work and will tell you what the current process looks like, but confirm the requirements with the relevant authority, meaning your own registrar and the Italian consulate for your area, before you invite anyone on the strength of it. Nobody should be booking a flight against a rule that somebody half remembers.

Guests and surprises are a difficult combination. Hiding two parents behind a temple wall makes a lovely photograph and a fragile plan, because every additional person who knows is another phone that can light up at the wrong moment and another face that cannot keep still at breakfast. If family are already in Sicily, we usually suggest bringing them to the table afterwards rather than to the cliff beforehand. The reunion twenty minutes later is warmer than the ambush, and nobody has spent the morning lying.

Then there are the people who will be hurt. This is the part couples rehearse least and dread most. What works is telling them early, telling them the truth, and being specific: we are having a very small ceremony abroad, with these two people present, and here is what we would like to do with you when we are home. What does not work is a vague announcement that leaves everyone calculating whether they were considered. Give people a role in the second event rather than an explanation for the first, and most of the difficulty dissolves.

For the group that does travel, plan for Sicily rather than for a photograph. The Valley of the Temples is a long site with real distances between the temples, little shade in the middle of the day and uneven ground underfoot. In July nobody in formal clothes should be walking it before seven in the evening. If there are grandparents coming, tell us in the first message, because it changes which locations we recommend, where vehicles can reach, and how much walking sits between the car and the ceremony.

Moresca Farm is the one private estate we work with, in the countryside outside Agrigento, and it is where a group can sit down properly under trees for a whole afternoon rather than standing on a path for twenty minutes. It is never part of a package and is always arranged separately, because the estate keeps its own calendar and its own limits on numbers. That is worth knowing early, since it affects dates more than any other element of a plan. /locations/moresca-farm sets out what it is and what it is not.

If you know roughly how many people you want and have no idea whether Sicily can hold them comfortably in the month you are coming, tell us the number and the dates. We will tell you what that group can realistically do here, which locations suit them, and where the plan would come under strain. It is a better use of an afternoon than a spreadsheet, and it is the conversation we would rather have early than late.
