Why we have never photographed a wedding in Puglia

19 January 2026 · 4 min · LOVEIN Journal

We turn down work most months. Usually it is Puglia, occasionally the Amalfi coast, now and then somewhere in Tuscany with a name we have to look up. The message is polite, the date is often free, and the answer is always the same: we do not work outside Sicily, and here are two photographers who do. It is a strange thing to write on a page whose purpose is to persuade you to hire us. It is also the clearest single thing we can tell you about how this work is actually done.

The reason is not sentiment about our island. It is that almost everything useful we know is local and does not travel. Knowing a place means knowing what it does in each month, at each hour, in each kind of weather, and acquiring that takes years of returning to the same six or seven locations in conditions nobody would choose. A photographer arriving in a new region two days early is working from exactly the information you already have: a map, a forecast, and other people's photographs, taken at the best hour of the best month of the year.

Concretely, that knowledge looks like this. Sicilian limestone holds warmth and throws it back, so golden hour here runs longer than the tables predict: the good window opens around 19:30 in July, closer to 17:15 in October, around 16:30 in February. The coaches leave Scala dei Turchi in a fairly predictable order and there is a gap afterwards. The walk up La Rocca above Cefalu is a genuine climb, and the wrong shoes will spoil an evening. The old harbour in Ortigia at eight in the morning is a different place entirely from the one visitors describe at eight at night.

Then there are the people. The same registry offices, the same drivers, the same florist in Agrigento, the same restaurant that will hold a table for twelve when a ceremony runs long. When something fails at six on a Saturday evening, and occasionally something does, what rescues the evening is a phone number that answers on the second ring because the person at the other end has known Salvo for fifteen years. That network cannot be assembled remotely and it cannot be carried to the mainland. It is the least visible part of what you are actually hiring.

Working nationally would also change who turns up. Photographers covering a whole country at volume manage it by subcontracting, which means the person writing the emails and the person at the location are two different people. Salvo photographs every commission himself. Cristiana writes and leads every ceremony herself. That is only sustainable inside a region we can drive across in a single morning, which is precisely why the line is drawn where it is drawn. The limit on geography is what protects the promise about personnel.

This costs us work, and it should cost us some of yours. If your heart is set on a terrace above Positano, we are the wrong choice and we will say so in the first reply rather than the fourth. Some couples find that reassuring and some find it inflexible. Both reactions are reasonable. What we would suggest is that you apply the same test to anyone else you are considering: ask how many regions they cover, then ask how many photographers are on the roster, then compare the two numbers carefully.

Our list is deliberately short. The Valley of the Temples, Punta Bianca, Scala dei Turchi at Realmonte, Torre Capo Rama at Terrasini, La Rocca above Cefalu, the old harbour in Ortigia, and Moresca Farm, the one private estate we work in, out in the Agrigento countryside and always arranged separately. Seven places, described honestly at /locations, including the parts of each that are difficult. We would rather know all of them properly than publish a page listing forty.

If Sicily is where you want this to happen, that narrowness works entirely in your favour, and the conversation can begin with which month you are coming and how the light behaves then. If you are still deciding between countries, tell us and we will be straight about whether we are the right people for it. Either way, write to us before you fix your flights, because the dates you choose determine most of what follows them.
